Mike had his surgery last Tuesday. It was a tough procedure but he's recovering well. The doctors were able to excise one of the two new lumps in his chest but, sadly, not the other. Now they're waiting for biopsy results before moving forward with chemo. Why the results are taking a week (and maybe more) to come back is a mystery.

I keep hoping, perhaps hopelessly, that the words "benign" and "clean bill of health" will show up in the report. In the meantime Mike is feeling pretty good since he's in between rounds of chemo. Karen and Derek and the family are doing the best they can to get by in the midst of all this uncertainty. We're all, just... waiting.

For what it's worth, the test results taking a while is good news - it means that even if the news is bad, an extra week isn't going to impact the efficacy of treatment; if it would, the oncologist would have ordered an expedited test.

I had about a month or so when I knew something was wrong with my throat, but didn't know yet if it was cancer. I was able to sleep easy at night because I knew I had done everything reasonable one could do to be on top of the situation, and was satisfied with how things were proceeding. I wish I had been able to impart that calm to Meredith, but it turns out I couldn't.

But really, there will be no difference in your brother's test results or eventual fate regardless of whether you worry or don't worry, and I am confident your brother would prefer the latter, even as I did for Mara.

Wishing Mike benign-ness and clean-bill-of-health-ness.
Glad to see the surgery went well.
Still pulling for ya, Mike!
