My Friends,

You may already know that my sister's beloved, Mike, has cancer.

Though he has braved surgery and months of chemotherapy, the fight is growing tougher. On Tuesday he will be undergoing more complicated surgery followed by much more aggressive chemo. This is a critical point in his treatment.

Mike and my sister Karen have a wonderful relationship and a beautiful son, Derek, just over a year and a half old.

Mike is almost certainly the friendliest, funniest, most lovable person I have ever met. We could not have asked for a better man for my sister or a happier ever after for the both of them. He needs the love and support of every single person who reads these words right now because the road ahead is dark and uncertain and cannot be conquered alone.

Please, take a moment here to express encouragement, healing, love, happiness, and well-wishing to Mike. Lend him a bit of space in your thoughts and your prayers so his way through this may be made easier. I will present this entry and all its comments to him on Tuesday before he goes to the hospital. I know, as you may also know, that such buoyant energies can truly alter the course of a person's life.

Many thanks to you all,

Baby hugs and well wishes to your brother-in-law and all who love him.

Also, if he is local and you find yourself needing a connection in the community of doctors let me know.

See, here's the thing. Cancer sucks so hard, that "well wishes" just don't seem to cut it. Cancer sucks so hard that you need to go further than that. Like, Geez, Mike, that's a terrible weight loss plan you've embarked on there. If they have to put equipment in uncomfortable places, ask the doctors if they'd even bought him a drink first.

Quite a number of your friends, J, have been through caring for cancer-struck folks, or have fought it themselves, that you have an unmatched resource of BTDT -- do not hesitate to call upon us. Send out the address of his hospital room so we can send cards and funny hats.

Oddly, my step-brother-in-law, also Mike, went through throat cancer treatment and aftermath just last year. This in a guy who doesn't smoke! Life's not fair. But he's beating it and we're going on a trip with him in July.

Very best of luck to you and yours, strength in this time of uncertainty. He's embarking on a journey; make sure he knows you (we all) want him to come back. Kaeru.

Mike, I don't know you, but I'm sending you good, loving thoughts and a baby wildcat (because you need a wildcat in your pocket at a time like this and this one's pocket-sized).

May all manner of things be well, and may you see that cute son of yours grown and perhaps with a cute son or daughter of his own should he choose (and to see that imaginary kid grow up.)

Lord, it seems as though our lives are one test after another, always weighing ourselves in somebody else's balance. Grant that we may take the coming test neither too seriously nor too lightly, Lord, but that it may reflect the best of our studies and the best of what we have been taught. Amen.

Dear Mike, Karen and Derek,

I hope knowing how much your sister (and aunt) Janet cares about you brings you some moments of joy during these dark times. Know that many of her friends think that you (Mike) must be an amazing person to be spoken of so highly by such a bright and wonderful woman. I send you good thoughts and prayers that your tough road is not as tough as you fear and that your loved ones can be strong for you when you need it.

with much warmth,

You are like a sister to me and your family never very far from my thoughts and prayers. As you know I've had several members of my family do battle with cancer and I know how harrowing the experience can be. Take some small comfort in knowing Mike has the strength of youth and the love and support of those around him and you. If there is anything I can do please let me know.
